Penny Blacwrite really knows how to craft a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved how this installment picked up right where the last one left off, leaving no room for confusion. The tension was palpable, especially with Kalena facing the consequences of her actions and still grappling with lingering issues from her past. It's a testament to Blacwrite's skill that even though I knew Kalena was making some questionable choices – like, seriously, sleeping with Roy?! – I still rooted for her.
The exploration of freedom and its cost was really compelling. The book doesn't shy away from the complexities of Kalena's situation; it shows that achieving freedom, especially from a toxic relationship, isn't a simple, straightforward path. There are repercussions, both intended and unintended, and Kalena has to navigate them all. I wasn't entirely happy with Kalena's treatment of Roy, though; it felt a little unfair, given her own actions. This definitely sparked a lot of discussion amongst readers!
